I think the sign of a truly great emo album is whether you can imagine it in a 20k cap venue as easily as you can imagine it in a 200 cap venue. It’s gotta be simultaneously sweaty and stadium-sized, and Dear You sounds like Dingwalls and Anfield at the same time. What a sentence that is.
A lot of this record falls on the heavier side of emo than that which I tend to go for. I’ve fallen in love with American Football and pre-perv Pinegrove more than I have with Mineral and pre-perv Brand New, but there’s a real magnetic intensity about this album that’s properly grabbed me instantly. I hate that sentence.
Accident Prone is a bonafide Anthema Turner, I had to listen again immediately after it finished. Straddles the line between post rock and pop punk which in a venn diagram of things 25 year old me likes and things 15 year old me likes would nestle slap bang in the middle, all nice and cosy like.
It’s another album that makes me think ‘singer in an emo band’ would be in top 3 dream professions – after professional footballer and semi-professional footballer. They all sound proper fun, but regrettably I can neither sing loud enough or get around the pitch quick enough.
